Class of 2017 member and Athlete of the Year Kelly Burns can be defined as someone who shows sportsmanship, dedication, passion, and success in all of the sports she plays. Kelly was a four year varsity basketball player at Mount St. Mary. She was a member of the basketball team who were New York State Catholic School B Champions in 2015. Her accomplishments were recognized in the media as she was twice named Super 7 Athlete by Channel 7 in 2016. Kelly was also on the MSM outdoor track and field team and was a member of the 2015 team who won the Monsignor Martin League championship. In addition, she was a part the 4x4 relay who competed in the Catholic High School Athletic Association Outdoor Intersectional City Championships.
Kelly was most successful in the pool and qualified for the New York State Federation meet all four years of her high school career. Over the course of her years on the swim team, she recorded numerous first place finishes at the All-Catholic meets, and she holds one Monsignor Martin league record in the 100 meter freestyle.
Kelly’s legacy will also live on at the Mount, and future swimmers will have to chase down her three school records in the 500 yard freestyle, 50 yard freestyle, and 100 yard freestyle. Kelly earned the honor of the Natalie Lewis MVP award at the 2016 All-Catholic meet for her outstanding performance throughout the competition. She was named in the Buffalo News as a Section 6 Scholar Athlete in the spring season and received Honorable Mention in the fall and winter seasons. Kelly’s hard work has paid off as she will be continuing her athletic career at the next level for Canisius College. Congratulations to Kelly Burns, the 2017 Mount St. Mary Athlete of the Year!
Class of 2017 member and Scholar Athlete award-winner Kaitlyn Hart was a three sport athlete her entire four years at Mount St. Mary. She began her MSM athletics career by playing JV volleyball, JV basketball, and varsity lacrosse. As a sophomore, she participated in JV volleyball, helped the Mount win its first ever State title in varsity basketball, and helped the lacrosse team win the Msgr. Martin League championship.
As a junior she was a vital player in bringing the varsity soccer team to a “B” playoff championship. Katie also participated in basketball, was the MVP of the lacrosse team, and was named the All-Catholic offensive MVP for lacrosse.
As a senior, Katie had an incredible year. She was named to the All-Catholic team for soccer and helped them win the “B” league championship, and she also played varsity basketball and varsity lacrosse, where she helped lead the team to a league championship. Katie is now a member of the 100 goals club for lacrosse, putting her in very elite company. To top it off she received the Bill Riffel award, was named All-Catholic, and received Super 7 Athlete recognition. Katie was named to the 1st Team All-WNY for lacrosse and was a two season Honorable Mention for the Section 6 Scholar Athlete award.
Despite being busy with all her athletic commitments, Katie brought the same level of hard work, dedication and determination to her academic pursuits, maintaining an impressive overall GPA of 95.62. In November, she signed her National Letter of Intent to continue her lacrosse and academic careers at Slippery Rock University. Class of 2017 member, Emily Trotman was the 2017 Sports Boosters Award winner for her dedication and support of Mount St. Mary athletics.
Class of 2016 member, Kimberly Forhd, lettered in three sports for Mount St. Mary including cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track. Kimberly has received all catholic honors, competed at both state and federation levels in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track. Notably she was the Cross-Country MVP for the Monsignor Martin League for back-to-back years in 2013 and 2014. She was a valuable member of three championship teams, the Cross-Country team won a league title during her sophomore year (2013), and the outdoor track team won back-to-back league titles during both her junior and senior years (2015 and 2016). Kimberly’s legacy will live on at the Mount, and future track athletes will have to chase down her four school records. She currently holds MSM records in the 800 meter, 4x200 meter relay, 4x400 meter relay, and the 4x800 meter relay.
Kimberly’s accomplishments were recognized by the local media, and she was twice named a Super 7 Athlete by WKBW Channel 7 in both 2015 and 2016. She was named in the Buffalo News as a Section 6 Honorable Mention Scholar Athlete 3 times this past year. She will continue her athletic career at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Congratulations to the 2016 Athlete of the Year!
Class of 2016 member Rachel Joachimi has run cross country and outdoor track all four years and indoor track for three years. Rachel’s success in the classroom are clearly visible as she graduates from the Mount with an overall average of 97.24 and has earned first honors all four years at Mount. She is also a member of the Academy Scholars program.
Rachel won the coach’s award freshman and senior years, and most improved runner sophomore and junior years. As a freshman and sophomore, she was a member of the Monsignor Martin League championship teams for cross country, capturing the first title in school history. Rachel was also a league champion for outdoor track her junior and senior years, almost 15 years since the Mount’s first Track title. She competed at states in indoor and outdoor track in her sophomore, junior, and senior year. As a junior and senior, she was also a federation athlete for indoor and outdoor track. Also in senior year, Rachel was named All Catholic in track. Her career at Mount includes breaking six school records, including the Long Jump, 4x200 Meter Relay, 400 Meter Hurdles, Pentathlon, 4x400 meter relay, and the 4000m distance relay. And she is a three-time honorable mention winner as a Section VI Scholar/Athlete. Clearly, the outside world has recognized her abilities in and outside the classroom.
Rachel will continue her academic and athletic paths as she heads to Canisius College to run and study Spanish. Congratulations to our 2016 Scholar Athlete of the year!
Class of 2015 member, Julie Fleming, lettered in three sports for Mount St. Mary including volleyball, basketball and softball. Julie has found success in the classroom and she graduated with an overall average of 95.16 from MSM. This itself is a great accomplishment, but her success did not stop there. As a junior Julie was named 1st Team All Catholic for Varsity Volleyball. In addition, she was named All-Tournament Team for Varsity Basketball and 2nd Team All Catholic for Varsity Softball.
Julie had an exceptional senior year. She was a great leader and role model for her teammates and was captain of the Varsity Volleyball and Varsity Softball team. Once again, she earned All Catholic for Varsity Volleyball. She went on to lead the Varsity Basketball team to a NY Catholic School Class B State Championship, the first in school history. Her leadership and dedication were recognized and she received many awards including Team MVP and League MVP. She earned the #1 spot on Super 7 Athlete of the Week and was recognized as Chanel 4’s WIBV Scholar Athlete of the month. She also was named 4th team All-Western NY and 6th team All State for basketball. Congratulations to our 2015 Scholar Athlete of the year!
Class of 2015 member, Ann Hoodmaker was the 2015 Sports Boosters Award winner for her dedication and support of MSM athletics.
Class of 2014 member, Samantha Barry, lettered in four sports for Mount St. Mary and this year participated in the following varsity sports: Cross Country, Basketball, and Track and Field. Some career highlights for Barry include 1st Team All Catholic for Cross Country in 2013, 2nd Team All Catholic for Basketball in 2014, and back to back 400m All Catholic Champion in Track and Field in 2013 and 2014. Barry finished her Thunder basketball career with 629 points, 345 rebounds and 50 assists. During her senior year Barry had a record breaking year by scoring 351 points. Next year, Barry will play basketball at the State University of New York at Geneseo. Congratulations to our 2014 Scholar Athlete of the year!
Class of 2014 member, Erin McCormick, lettered in three sports for Mount St. Mary and Holy Angels Academy including soccer, basketball and lacrosse. This year McCormick was named 2nd Team All Catholic 2013 for Soccer and served as a team captain. In the classroom, McCormick challenged herself by taking two AP classes and two college courses during her senior year-- for a total of 18 college credits. Even with this challenging course load, McCormick graduated with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors along with Mastery Distinction in both Math and Science from MSM. Due to her exceptional academic achievements, she earned over $200,000 in scholarship money to various colleges. Next Fall, she will continue her academic excellence at University at Buffalo and major in Biology. Congratulations to our 2014 Scholar Athlete of the year!
Class of 2014 member, Hailey Rose Gattuso, lettered in three sports for Mount St. Mary and this year participated in the following varsity sports: Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Track and Field. As leading member of the MSM Running Program, Hailey Rose Gattuso has competed in the 4x800m, 600m, 1000m at the Indoor Track CHSAA Championship Meet. She was instrumental in leading the Thunder to their first (2012) and second (2013) MML championship in Cross Country. On the Track, Gattuso holds MSM Records in 1500m, 3200m Relay, and 4000m Distance Medley Relay. Next Fall, Gattuso will be running at St. Bonaventure University. Congratulations to the 2014 Athlete of the Year!
Class of 2014 member, Molly Meka, lettered in Swimming for Mount St. Mary and Holy Angels Academy. Meka began high school by being named Holy Angels’ Swimmer and Rookie of the Year as a freshman. She was Holy Angels’ MVP her sophomore year. As a junior, Meka set and will forever hold the 100 backstroke record at Holy Angels.
Senior year as a new Mountie, Meka didn’t let up and swam her way into the MSM and Monsignor Martin record books. She was named a team captain and went on to become an All-Catholic champion in all four events she swam: 50 free, 100 free, 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay. Meka now holds Mount St. Mary records for all four of these events. Meka also holds the All Catholic record as a member of the 200 yard medley relay and the All Catholic and Monsignor Martin Record as a member of the 200 yard freestyle relay. For her outstanding performance at the 2013 Swimming All Catholics, Meka was named MVP of the All-Catholic meet this year.
Meka continued her swimming success at the New York State Championship in 2013. As a member of the 200 yard freestyle relay, she helped her team to a 7th place finish. This is the first time that any relay from the Monsignor Martin League has placed in the top ten at the state competition. Individually, Meka competed the 100 free and placed 31st in the state.
Meka will be swimming next year for the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Congratulations to the 2014 Athlete of the Year!
